On 22 and 23 August 2025, the Belgian Pavilion hosted a rare and unforgettable cinematic and musical encounter: the screening of Fuun-Jo-Shi (1928), a Japanese silent film brought to life with a new score by Belgian composer Stéphane Orlando.
Performed live by the Erämaa Ensemble, accompanied by Aki Sato on koto and shamisen, the event mesmerized audiences with a dialogue between Western contemporary music and the delicate beauty of traditional Japanese instruments. The performance created a unique experience where the silent poetry of early cinema merged seamlessly with live musical expressiveness.
This Belgian–Japanese collaboration elevated Fuun-Jo-Shi beyond film, turning it into a cultural conversation across generations and art forms. Visitors were transported through a timeless story of loyalty, love, and fate, enriched by a score that bridged East and West, leaving audiences inspired and deeply moved.
The event underscored the Belgian Pavilion’s commitment to fostering artistic exchange, blending innovation, tradition, and cross-cultural storytelling in ways that resonate long after the performance.
