Ground-breaking ceremony, two years before opening

Exactly two years before the opening of Expo 2025 Osaka, the Ground-Breaking Ceremony took place. During which, the first works on the expo grounds were (symbolically) carried out. Thus, Osaka and the participating countries took another step forward in their preparations.

13 April 2023: the first works at the exhibition site

On 13 April 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conducted the Ground-Breaking Ceremony on Yumeshima Island, where the exhibition site is located. This was also done in the presence of the head of Expo Management, Masakazu Tokura. On that symbolic date, the first works were carried out at the expo site exactly two years before the opening of Expo 2025 Osaka.

During the ceremony, the plots at the expo site were also officially transferred from the Expo Organiser to the participating countries. This means participating countries can start building their pavilions from then on.

Japan's prime minister mentioned in his speech that he hopes Expo 2025 Osaka will attract more visitors from all over the world than the 1975 expo. That expo also took place in Osaka.

The expo organisers expect some 28 million visits over a six-month period. The number of participants currently stands at 153, including countries, regions, and international organisations.
